Vancouver Olympics Horror, 21-YR-Old Luger Dies In Crash

THE HORRIFYING death of Olympics star Nodar Kumaritashvili has led to postponing the training in the Winter Olympic events. On Friday’s 21-year-old Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili lost his life in a luge crash.

He flew off the track and landed on a metal pole in Whistler. Medics administered CPR at the scene following the second of two training runs. Kumaritashvili was then placed on a stretcher with blood pouring from his head and taken away in an ambulance.

The training has now been suspended at the Whistler Sliding Center in Vancouver, according to the New York Daily News.

Reportedly the Georgian delegation has said the country might consider pulling out of the games in the wake of the tragedy. The people who witnessed the horrifying accident told news agencies how the “21-year-old crashed at one of the fastest points near the bottom of the track on the final 270-degree turn.”

“He hit both sides of the wall before being hurled over the top and smashing into the pole at the side of the track.”

Vancouver Olympic Committee has now pledged to carry out an investigation to “ensure a safe field of play” for the games.

More than $170,000 of property taxpayers’ funds has been spent for those two ceremonies, for which the city has purchased 200 tickets. Of those, 80 per cent are for “A” category seats.

THE OPENING ceremony for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics is just around the corner, and final details are hurriedly being worked out in Whistler and venue attractions throughout the Vancouver region.

Americans have dominated Olympic snowboarding since it debuted in 1998 at Nagano, Japan, and have expectations soaring high ahead of the Winter Olympics.

"We are going in to the 2010 Games with one of the strongest athletic lineups possible," US Snowboarding coach Peter Foley told news agencies on Wednesday . "We're hoping to go into Vancouver and build on the successes we saw in 2006. This team is in position to do great things."

Reigning snowboardcross champion Wescott will be joined by five-time X Games champion Nate Holland, 2006 Olympian Graham Watanabe and newcomer Nick Baumgartner.

Lindsey Jacobellis, who settled for silver at the 2006 Olympics, returns to the women's snowboardcross lineup as a favorite, joined by Olympic newcomers Faye Gulini and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof.

Vancouver International Airport will be the first stop for more than 230,000 Olympics-bound athletes, officials, coaches, support teams and out-of-town visitors, and it is taking its role as the city’s front door very seriously. All private aircraft heading to Vancouver will have to land in a "gateway" airport before going to Vancouver.

The Mono Skier took place on Sunday Afternoon, January 31 at 2pm MT. It was telecast on ESPN channel.

American Daron Rahlves, favourite to win his second WX gold crashed in the rhythm section in the quarter finals trying to male a pass.

Tyler Walker won his second gold in the Mono Skier X finals in the winter X games 14 in Aspen. It was his second gold in a row.

Tyler is a current member of the US Adaptive Ski Team, 2008 Winter X game Mono Skier X gold medalist.

Chris Devlin-Young still holds the title as the oldest mono skier in competition at 48 years old.

Gregory won the silver medal as he fell after the last jump.

Kevin Connolly won the bronze medal.
