THE HORRIFYING death of Olympics star Nodar Kumaritashvili has led to postponing the training in the Winter Olympic events. On Friday’s 21-year-old Georgian Nodar Kumaritashvili lost his life in a luge crash.

He flew off the track and landed on a metal pole in Whistler. Medics administered CPR at the scene following the second of two training runs. Kumaritashvili was then placed on a stretcher with blood pouring from his head and taken away in an ambulance.

The training has now been suspended at the Whistler Sliding Center in Vancouver, according to the New York Daily News.

Reportedly the Georgian delegation has said the country might consider pulling out of the games in the wake of the tragedy. The people who witnessed the horrifying accident told news agencies how the “21-year-old crashed at one of the fastest points near the bottom of the track on the final 270-degree turn.”

“He hit both sides of the wall before being hurled over the top and smashing into the pole at the side of the track.”

Vancouver Olympic Committee has now pledged to carry out an investigation to “ensure a safe field of play” for the games.

"We are going in to the 2010 Games with one of the strongest athletic lineups possible," US Snowboarding coach Peter Foley told news agencies on Wednesday . "We're hoping to go into Vancouver and build on the successes we saw in 2006. This team is in position to do great things."

Reigning snowboardcross champion Wescott will be joined by five-time X Games champion Nate Holland, 2006 Olympian Graham Watanabe and newcomer Nick Baumgartner.

Lindsey Jacobellis, who settled for silver at the 2006 Olympics, returns to the women's snowboardcross lineup as a favorite, joined by Olympic newcomers Faye Gulini and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof.

American Daron Rahlves, favourite to win his second WX gold crashed in the rhythm section in the quarter finals trying to male a pass.

Tyler Walker won his second gold in the Mono Skier X finals in the winter X games 14 in Aspen. It was his second gold in a row.

Tyler is a current member of the US Adaptive Ski Team, 2008 Winter X game Mono Skier X gold medalist.

Chris Devlin-Young still holds the title as the oldest mono skier in competition at 48 years old.

Gregory won the silver medal as he fell after the last jump.

Already the warmest city ever to host the Winter Olympic Games, Vancouver in February 2010 is going to be even balmier than usual, experts say.

The Pacific Northwest Canadian city (Vancouver map)—which will host the games from today through February 28, 2010—just experienced its warmest January since record keeping began in 1937. Temperatures averaged 44.8 degrees Fahrenheit (7.1 degrees Celsius), considerably warmer than the average of 37.9 degrees Fahrenheit (3.3 degrees Celsius). Average February temperatures for Winter Olympic host cities are typically below freezing.

At first glance the culprit behind the city’s balmy winter weather appears to be the current El Niño, a game changer in worldwide weather patterns that occurs every two to seven years. During an El Niño event—such as the current one, which began in summer 2009—the Pacific Ocean warms up near equatorial South America and disrupts large-scale atmospheric circulation.

"Once El Niño starts, Vancouver typically gets warmer and slightly drier weather," said William Hsieh, an atmospheric scientist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

El Niño usually peaks in the tropical Pacific Ocean in December and January, but it takes about a month for El Niño waters to travel north to Vancouver's latitude. "So our peak El Niño effect is around February,” he said—just in time for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

Washington, Feb 13 : Reports have it that the emblem for the Vancouver 2010 under the eye of a storm, as it has evoked criticism for its inability to reflect the native art and culture of the

region and the rest of British Columbia.The emblem depicts an inukshuk, a symbol used by the Inuit people, or Eskimos, of Canada's Arctic regions.

For centuries, the Inuit have stacked rocks to create inukshuk, which act as guideposts for people traversing the vast tundra.

The emblem is dubbed Ilanaaq—"friend" in an Inuit language—and is an "eternal expression of the hospitality of a nation that warmly welcomes the people of the world with open arms every day," according to the Vancouver 2010 Web site.

But Ilanaaq has generated controversy among some First Nations—Canada's term for non-Inuit groups.

According to a report in National Geographic News, the groups feel the symbol doesn't reflect the native art and culture of the Vancouver region and the rest of British Columbia, such as totem poles.
